Internet in Vienna for students: what do you actually need?
A student does not need one standard internet package. One person who is on campus most of the day may need far less than four people in a shared flat who stream, game, and join video calls at the same time. Start with simultaneous use, then check the exact Vienna address and contract conditions.

Two ways to find a good fit
Calculate your needs yourself or ask for personal support in Vienna without taking the quiz first.
SELF-SERVICE
Calculate your flat or WG's needs
The check turns simultaneous use into download and upload requirements and matches real current tariff data.
- Short quiz
- A1 and Magenta portfolio
- Address needed separately for availability
PERSONAL SUPPORT
Speak directly to an adviser
Ask about a new home, WG, ordering, or basic setup in Vienna without a quiz result first.
- District or postcode is enough to start
- No quiz result required
- Availability before ordering
Start with the household, not the word “student”
Your course or student status does not determine bandwidth. The important questions are who shares the connection, what happens during the busiest hour, and whether upload, low latency, stability, or short download times matter. The public internet check is available in English and does not require technical knowledge.

Living alone and living in a WG are different cases
- One-person flat: occasional streaming and ordinary study work can be a light profile, unless large downloads, cloud work, or frequent video calls change it.
- Two-person flat: overlap matters. A stream and a video call at the same time need more than either activity alone.
- Shared flat or WG: several independent users can create busy evening peaks, so calculate the number of simultaneous streams, calls, gaming sessions, and uploads.
Real examples from the welchesinternet.at calculation
These are not universal student tiers. They are profiles processed by the same deterministic quiz and matching logic used by the public check. Availability at the address is still pending.

Check the exact address before choosing a provider
A tariff can look suitable but still be unavailable in a particular building. The address is not needed to calculate your human requirement; it is needed to confirm connection technology, available speed, and actual offer conditions. If you are still applying for flats, calculate the need first and perform the availability check once the address is fixed.
A1 or Magenta?
There is no universal winner for students or international newcomers. The better fit depends on the address, technology, download, upload, price phases, promotions, minimum term, and your household's use. welchesinternet.at currently includes products from the integrated A1 and Magenta portfolio, not every Austrian provider. Use theA1 or Magenta guide for the full decision.
How much internet does your WG need?
Pay attention to contract length if you may move again
Compare the minimum term, price during and after promotions, known one-off costs, and the provider's moving conditions. Decide who will sign the contract and remain responsible for it if flatmates change. Do not assume that a future move automatically ends the agreement; check the specific contract and ask the provider what happens at a new address.
What if the apartment already has a connection?
Ask the landlord or current occupants what physical connection and provider equipment remain, but do not assume that an old socket or router means an active, transferable contract. The provider still needs to confirm the address, product, activation, and whether existing hardware can be used or must be returned.
How long does activation take, and is a technician needed?
Both depend on the address. A suitable existing connection may simplify activation; other cases can require hardware delivery, line work, or a technician appointment. Same-day requests can be prioritised, but same-day activation is not guaranteed. Arrange internet before the day you need it whenever possible.
Plan Wi-Fi for the apartment, not only the tariff
A router in one corner may not cover a long Vienna apartment or rooms behind thick walls. Place it centrally where possible, test the actual rooms, and add an access point or mesh only if the coverage needs it. More Mbps will not repair a Wi-Fi dead zone. See theslow internet and Wi-Fi guide.
What information should you have ready?
- The exact installation address once it is confirmed.
- The number of people and the activities likely to overlap.
- The date from which you need the connection.
- Any existing provider, contract, socket, or router information you can reliably obtain.
A provider may require additional identity, billing, or ordering details. Those requirements are confirmed for the specific order rather than guessed on this page.
Is the check free, and how does welchesinternet.at earn money?
Standard tariff advice, ordering, and basic setup are free. When a referral is successful, we receive compensation from the relevant provider. Additional services or hardware may incur a charge after prior agreement.
This compensation does not affect the needs calculation or product recommendation. You can use the recommendation free of charge and without obligation, without ordering through welchesinternet.at.
