How much internet speed do I need?

The internet speed you need depends mainly on what happens at the same time in your home. Two simultaneous 4K streams and a video call require more capacity than the same number of people browsing at different times. Download and upload should be calculated separately.

What does the welchesinternet.at check do?

  1. You answer questions about your household and internet use.
  2. The answers are converted into separate download and upload requirements, plus relevant quality needs.
  3. That requirement is matched with suitable products from the currently integrated A1 and Magenta portfolio.
  4. Before an order, the address is checked to confirm technology, availability, and actual offer conditions.
  5. You decide whether to use the result on its own or ask for support with ordering and basic setup.

We currently compare the integrated A1 and Magenta portfolio, not every Austrian internet provider.

Household size is not the same as simultaneous use

Five people do not automatically need five times the bandwidth of one person. What matters is how many demanding activities overlap at the household's busy moment. A large household in which people browse at different times may need less than a couple running several streams, calls, backups, and downloads together.

Streaming adds up when streams run together

One stream and three simultaneous streams are different technical situations. Picture quality matters as well, so the detailed questions distinguish Full HD from 4K when that information is relevant. Streaming alone does not make every household a gigabit household.

Home office needs upload as well as download

In a video meeting you receive video and audio while sending your own camera, microphone, and sometimes a shared screen. Cloud backup and large file uploads can increase the upstream need further. This is why the check does not infer upload from the download number.

Gaming: bandwidth, latency, and downloads are different

  • Ordinary online gaming: stability and low latency are often more important than a very large download figure.
  • Game downloads and updates: more bandwidth mainly reduces waiting time.
  • Cloud gaming: the game video is streamed and therefore needs more continuous download capacity, as well as stable latency.
  • Livestreaming gameplay: upload becomes a central requirement.

Why the calculation includes practical headroom

A theoretical minimum covers only the selected activity flows. Real homes have overlap, background traffic, and peaks that are not perfectly predictable. The calculation adds controlled planning headroom and rounds the result into a practical requirement that can be compared with real tariff speeds. It is deterministic and does not use AI.

Five examples calculated by the real quiz logic

These values are generated from Product 0.3 quiz profiles during the build. They are not manually assigned ranges. Each tariff is a needs-based catalog match; final availability still depends on the address.

One person · everyday use

Browsing, messaging, and occasional streaming.

Recommended download
30 Mbps
Recommended upload
6 Mbps

Current needs-based match: A1 Internet 50(50/10 Mbps). Address availability has not been checked.

Two people · streaming and home office

Streaming and video calls with some simultaneous use.

Recommended download
55 Mbps
Recommended upload
18 Mbps

Current needs-based match: Magenta Internet XXS(100/20 Mbps). Address availability has not been checked.

Four people · family household

Several streams, video calls, and ordinary online gaming.

Recommended download
110 Mbps
Recommended upload
25 Mbps

Current needs-based match: A1 Glasfaser Internet 250(250/100 Mbps). Address availability has not been checked.

Two people · gaming household

Online gaming, streaming, and larger downloads.

Recommended download
50 Mbps
Recommended upload
8 Mbps

Current needs-based match: A1 Internet 50(50/10 Mbps). Address availability has not been checked.

Five people · high simultaneous use

Several streams, home office, gaming, downloads, and cloud uploads.

Recommended download
150 Mbps
Recommended upload
40 Mbps

Current needs-based match: A1 Glasfaser Internet 250(250/100 Mbps). Address availability has not been checked.

What does your own household need?

A faster tariff does not automatically fix bad Wi-Fi

Tariff speed describes the connection to the router. Walls, distance, interference, router placement, and the receiving device affect the Wi-Fi connection inside the apartment. If one room is slow while a wired device is fast, buying more Mbps is unlikely to address the real bottleneck. See the slow internet and Wi-Fi guide.

Needs calculation and product availability are separate

The quiz can calculate human demand without an address. An address is required before a product can be treated as orderable, because connection technology and available speed can differ by building. Prices and promotions can also change and are confirmed against the specific offer before an order.

Calculate your household's actual requirement

The free check converts your usage into download and upload needs, then matches them with suitable products from the current A1 and Magenta portfolio.
